02.09
2024

This will be a unique concert that will promote cultural diversity, inclusiveness, racial equality and artistic international cooperation.

On September 15, 2024, the Bydgoszcz-Toruń group ||ALA|MEDA|| and the trio PHELIMUNCASI from Durban (South Africa) will perform at the MÓZG club in Bydgoszcz.

||ALA|MEDA|| – Existing since 2014, the band is formed by artists from Bydgoszcz and Toruń. Their music is a mix of influences from contemporary African and South American music creatively processed in the spirit of rhythmic electronic and post-rock music. The lineup with its music has toured quite a few festivals across Europe and received many positive reviews. The latest album (Spectra. Vol.2) was named “Album of the Week” by The Quietus magazine: https://thequietus.com/quietus-reviews/album-of-the-week/ala-meda-spectra-volume-2-review/

And it features the band PHELIMUNCAS, which was just invited to perform, co-writing the song “um’khonto.”

For their concert collaboration, they invited PHELIMUNCASI, currently on a European tour, a band formed in 2012 in the township of Mlaszi in Durban, South Africa, using the musical style of gqom as a tool for theatrical storytelling and social commentary. And there are quite a few of these in their texts – from rebelling against racist ideologies, to criticizing totalitarian systems, to spreading the idea of equality and broad inclusivity.

Their music is characterized by strong futuristic beats with narrative storytelling that has been part of South African tradition for hundreds of years, call-and-response vocals sung in both their local isiZulu language and English. Their music is driven by opposition and dissent to social inequality and racism, and reflects on South Africa’s cultural past, present and future.
