Drums have always been a universal language that connects all of humanity. However, Japanese drums have a special magic – an almost irresistible charm. The deep, resonant sounds and archaic, powerful rhythms of the large, vibrating drums speak for themselves. In the musical traditions of the peoples of the world, it is difficult to find a greater force than Taiko – the ancient Japanese art of drumming. No other drumming engages so many senses at once.
The journey of this band from Düsseldorf began in Japan, specifically in Takefu (Fukui Prefecture), where Frank Dubberke, founder and leader of WADOKYO, decided to learn how to play the taiko drum. Since then, WADOKYO has created its own modern style based on this Far Eastern tradition. Over the past 20 years, the band has enjoyed success performing at various events and festivals, as well as appearing on radio and television in 25 countries around the world.
But it is not only the sound of these powerful instruments that moves the audience. It is also the passionate, energetic nature of WADOKYO’s performers—their wild joy and total dedication, which are met with thunderous applause and enthusiasm everywhere they go. WADOKYO is a different kind of performance group. A European ensemble trained in Japan, it perfectly combines worlds and cultures.

Lectures:
“On translating manga and the peculiarities of the Japanese language” – Wojciech Gęszczak
Japanese comics (manga) are a phenomenon that reached Poland on the wave of popularity of Japanese anime series. The first translations of manga into Polish were published in the second half of the 1990s. A long-time translator of Japanese comics will talk about his experiences with translating manga. In addition to presenting interesting facts about translating comics, he will also discuss some untranslatable nuances of the Japanese language.
“On the Specifics of the Japanese Music Market” – Mateusz Łysiak
During the meeting, I talk about the specifics of the Japanese music market, with particular emphasis on vinyl records from the 1970s and 1980s. I focus on how the cultural context, aesthetics, and way of life in Japan have influenced the production and reception of music. During the meeting, I discuss issues such as:
- sound differences between Japanese and Western releases of the same albums,
- the influence of traditional culture and aesthetics on the way music is produced,
- the phenomenon of unique, local versions of foreign artists’ albums available only in Japan.
There will also be some interesting facts, such as how elements of Kabuki theater found their way into heavy metal albums, or how the culture of listening to music in Japan influenced the final sound of vinyl records and CDs.
